The curtain has fallen on Stan Wawrinka's remarkable Roland-Garros story. The 41-year-old Swiss lost to Dutch lucky loser Jesper de Jong 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round, bringing to a close a 21-year chapter in Paris.
Despite temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, there were few empty seats on Court Simonne-Mathieu as fans gathered to witness the 2015 champion's final appearance on Parisian clay. Wawrinka showed flashes of his legendary talent in the second set, firing up the crowd with a 6-3 comeback, but the physical demands ultimately took their toll against an opponent two decades younger.
The post-match ceremony was deeply moving. Wawrinka was presented with a glass case containing a section of the clay court, while two video tributes played on the stadium's big screens. Messages from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic left the Swiss visibly emotional.
Wawrinka departs Roland-Garros ranked ninth on the all-time list of men's singles victories at the tournament with 46 wins. His 2015 triumph, where he defeated Djokovic in the final, remains one of the defining moments of the past decade in tennis. The Swiss will continue his farewell tour before retiring at the end of the season.
