Stefanos Tsitsipas sent a powerful statement on Madrid's red clay. Against Alexander Bublik, the world number 11 known for his unpredictable style, the Greek left no room for doubt: 6-2, 7-5, in barely seventy-five minutes.
From the opening games, Tsitsipas dictated the pace. His heavy topspin forehand pushed Bublik well behind the baseline, denying the Kazakh his trademark net approaches. Two early breaks sealed the first set 6-2 without drama.
The second set proved more competitive. Bublik rediscovered his serve and found some inspiration at the net, keeping the scoreboard level until 5-5. But Tsitsipas raised his level at the crucial moment, breaking to lead 6-5 with a surgical backhand passing shot that drew roaring applause from the Caja Magica crowd. He then served it out, 7-5.
This victory marks a turning point for the Greek, who had been searching for his clay-court rhythm since the season began. A Roland-Garros finalist in 2021 and semifinalist in 2023, Tsitsipas has always considered the red dirt his hunting ground. In Madrid, he appears to have rediscovered the fluidity of movement and striking confidence that make him a formidable opponent.
In the round of 16, Tsitsipas will face young Spaniard Daniel Merida, who will enjoy home crowd support. But given his current form, the Greek could well have a say in the second week of the tournament. (Source: Greek City Times, Tennis Temple)
