The Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole enters the history books this Sunday. Marta Kostyuk and Veronika Podrez will contest the first all-Ukrainian singles final in WTA Tour history, a powerful symbol for a nation still at war.
Top seed Kostyuk, ranked 28th in the world, cruised through the draw with authority. She dismantled Tatjana Maria 6-3, 6-0 in just 59 minutes in the semifinals. "I knew her game well, which allowed me to play aggressively from the first point," the 23-year-old said. She is chasing a second career title and following in the footsteps of fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who won the Rouen title last year.
Podrez's journey reads like a fairy tale. A qualifier ranked 209th in the world, the 19-year-old is playing her first week on the main tour. She defeated 2024 champion Sloane Stephens, world No. 41 Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Katie Boulter before advancing to the final via Sorana Cirstea's withdrawal due to a lower-leg injury. The first qualifier to reach a Rouen semifinal, Podrez has risen from 435th in the rankings in just one year.
Kostyuk enters as the clear favorite but knows her young compatriot has nothing to lose. "I expect her to feel the pressure of her first WTA final," the top seed noted. The final promises an intriguing generational clash between two players united by the same flag and the same resilience.
