Day nine at the Internazionali d'Italia delivered two contrasting narratives. On one side, Casper Ruud's clinical dismantling of Luciano Darderi in the semifinal. On the other, an absorbing heavyweight clash between Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev that Roman rain froze mid-drama.
Ruud set the tone early, dispatching Darderi 6-1, 6-1. The Norwegian, who had dropped just one set all week, capitalized on the Italian's exhaustion from back-to-back marathon matches against Alexander Zverev and Rafael Jodar. Darderi simply had nothing left in the tank.
The atmosphere shifted dramatically under the evening lights on Campo Centrale. Sinner and Medvedev produced a match of rare intensity. The Italian cruised through the first set 6-2, only for Medvedev to fight back and claim a hard-fought second set 7-5. The decider took a concerning turn when Sinner called for a medical timeout, visibly struggling physically. Despite the discomfort, the world number one broke back to lead 4-2 before rain halted play at 9:45 PM.
Saturday promises a packed schedule. The Sinner-Medvedev semifinal resumes at 3 PM, followed by the women's final between Coco Gauff and Elina Svitolina. Gauff will seek to avenge two defeats to the Ukrainian this season, while Svitolina, unbeaten in clay-court finals with a 7-0 record, targets a maiden Rome title. The men's final is scheduled for Sunday (ATP Tour, WTA).
