Ignacio Buse has written one of the finest chapters in South American tennis history. The 22-year-old Peruvian qualifier defeated sixth seed Tommy Paul 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3 in the Hamburg ATP 500 final. Three hours and three minutes of battle in sweltering heat to claim the first title of his career.
Buse becomes the first Peruvian player to win an ATP tournament since Luis Horna triumphed at Viña del Mar in 2007. An 18-year wait for an entire nation. He is also only the third qualifier in history to lift an ATP 500 trophy, following Nikoloz Basilashvili (Hamburg 2018) and Daniil Medvedev (Tokyo 2018).
The final nearly slipped away from him. After taking the first set in a tiebreak, Buse faltered badly. Trailing 0-4 in the second set, he called for the tournament doctor due to dizziness caused by the heat. The Peruvian appeared on the verge of collapse. But he found fresh legs in the decider, breaking Paul's serve in the fourth game before closing out with authority.
Paul, seeking a second title this season after his semifinal run in Munich, failed to capitalize on his opponent's physical struggles. The American made too many unforced errors at crucial moments in the third set, paying the price for a demanding week that included three-set matches throughout.
This triumph catapults Buse to world No. 31, a leap of 26 places. He becomes the fourth Peruvian player in history to crack the Top 50, joining Jaime Yzaga, Pablo Arraya and Luis Horna. At 22, the tour is discovering a player who thrives on clay, with a complete clay-court game and a champion's mentality.
Next up: Roland-Garros, where Buse will make his Grand Slam main-draw debut as a ranked player.
