The 2026 Mutua Madrid Open delivered its biggest shock on Monday night. Anastasia Potapova, who entered the draw as a lucky loser, defeated world number two Elena Rybakina 7-6(8), 6-4 in one hour and 53 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.
The opening set was a masterclass in competitive resilience. Potapova broke early and built a 3-1 lead before Rybakina stormed back with four consecutive games to serve for the set at 5-3. But the Russian broke back at love and forced a tiebreak that swung dramatically. Potapova saved two set points before converting her third with a backhand winner down the line, 10-8 in the breaker.
Riding the momentum of that dramatic opener, Potapova maintained her intensity in the second set. The world number 47 mixed up the pace brilliantly, preventing Rybakina from settling into her trademark power game. A decisive break in the seventh game sealed the straight-sets upset, 6-4.
The victory marks Potapova's fourth career Top 5 scalp and writes a new page in Madrid Open history. She becomes the first lucky loser to reach the quarterfinals since the tournament was first held in 2009.
Potapova will face former world number one Karolina Pliskova in the last eight. For Rybakina, the early exit puts a dent in her clay season ambitions with Roland-Garros less than six weeks away.
