The women's Round of 16 at the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open produced a stunning Monday of upsets at the Caja Mágica. Of the three biggest favorites still standing, only world number one Aryna Sabalenka survived to reach the quarterfinals, and she needed every ounce of her champion's resolve to get there.
The headline match lived up to its billing. Naomi Osaka dominated the first set tiebreak 7-1 after twelve games without a break, then secured a break in the third game of the second set. A set and a break up against Sabalenka on clay seemed like an impossible lead to squander. But the Belarusian flipped a switch, reeling off two breaks in the second set and five straight games in the decider to complete a 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2 comeback in two hours and 20 minutes. Sabalenka finished with 31 winners and six aces, extending her run to 17 consecutive WTA quarterfinals.
The other blockbuster delivered equally wild swings. Linda Noskova, last year's finalist, ousted Coco Gauff 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5) in a match that defied logic. Down 4-1 in the decider after losing ten of twelve games, Noskova pulled off the most dramatic comeback of the day by winning seven of the last nine tiebreak points. Both players finished with 30 winners each, but Noskova's ice-cold composure in the clutch moments proved decisive. It was her first Top 10 win of the season.
The evening session delivered one more shock as , a lucky loser, upset second seed 7-6(8), 6-4. completed the quarterfinal lineup by defeating Belinda Bencic 6-1, 6-7(14), 6-3 in a match featuring the longest regular tour-level tiebreak since 2024.
The quarterfinals promise an open draw. Sabalenka faces Baptiste, Potapova meets former world number one Karolina Pliskova, and Noskova could cross paths with in a loaded bottom half.
