Yannick Hanfmann, ranked 95th in the world, produced the upset of the early rounds at the Foro Italico. The German defeated Hubert Hurkacz, a seeded player, in three sets: 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 6-2. A victory built on patience and finished with authority.
The first set set the tone for a tight contest. Neither player managed to break serve before the tie-break, where the Pole converted his chances to take the opening set. Hanfmann could have folded. Instead, he raised his level.
In the second set, another tie-break arrived, but this time the German seized control. With a commanding 7-2 breaker, he leveled the match and shifted the psychological momentum firmly in his direction. Hurkacz began to accumulate errors.
The third set was one-way traffic. Hanfmann earned the first break of the entire match in the second game, then rolled through his service games to close out a 6-2 decider. The Pole, visibly fatigued, never found answers to his opponent's consistency.
For Hurkacz, it marks a disappointing early exit after a mixed start to the clay season. The former Wimbledon semifinalist struggled to find his rhythm on the Roman clay.
Hanfmann, a clay-court specialist, rediscovers his taste for big moments. At 34, the German proves he can still trouble seeded players at Masters 1000 level. He will face a main draw opponent in the next round, riding the confidence of what may be his best win of the season.
