The script seemed written. Alexander Zverev, world number 3 and second seed, had dispatched the opening set 6-1 in just 32 minutes. The German machine was running at full power, and Luciano Darderi looked doomed.
But the Foro Italico had other plans. The Italian, lifted by a raucous Roman crowd, launched a comeback nobody saw coming. Trailing 3-5 in the second set, Darderi refused to fold. The ensuing tiebreak will be remembered for years: four match points saved at 5-6, 7-8, 8-9, and 9-10 before the Italian finally clinched it 12-10 on his second set point.
The third set was a complete implosion from Zverev. A ruthless 6-0 bagel in which the German found no answers whatsoever. In 2 hours and 28 minutes, Darderi produced the biggest win of his career: his first victory over a top-10 player after five unsuccessful attempts.
"I took some sugar during the second set, I had no energy left," Darderi explained afterward. "I won because of the crowd. You can't give up here." Simple words for an extraordinary moment.
For the world number 20, the rewards are significant: a first Masters 1000 quarterfinal, a first top-10 scalp, and a projected rise to 17th in the live rankings. Darderi will also be seeded at Roland-Garros, a scenario unthinkable just weeks ago.
Zverev was left to reflect on what might have been. "I should have won in two sets. That's the story," he admitted, fully aware of the chances he squandered. The German also missed his chance to reach the quarterfinals at all five 2026 Masters 1000 events.
Darderi will face Rafael Jodar in the quarterfinals, setting up a clash between two rising forces on the Roman clay.
