Roland-Garros has its first shock result. Nishesh Basavareddy, ranked 148th in the world and armed with a wild card, eliminated Taylor Fritz, the seventh seed, in the first round: 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-1.
The match turned on the finest of margins. In the first two sets, Basavareddy displayed remarkable composure to claim both tiebreaks 7-5, despite facing an opponent ranked 130 places above him. Fritz, who had reached the semifinals in Geneva the previous week, never found answers to the young American's varied game.
The third set brought a flicker of hope for the favourite. Fritz saved a match point at 6-5 in the tiebreak before prevailing 11-9 in a breathless decider. The crowd sensed a comeback. It never materialised.
Basavareddy began the fourth set with cold determination. Two early breaks, a rock-solid serve, and Fritz found himself cornered with no way out. The final 6-1 scoreline left no room for argument.
At 20 years old, Basavareddy recorded his first career victory over a Top 10 player. He becomes the first wild card to defeat a Top 8 seed in the first round at Roland-Garros since 2019. For Fritz, it represents a brutal setback after an encouraging start to the clay-court season.
The young American will face a more manageable opponent on paper in the second round. But after a performance like this, form guides count for little. Basavareddy showed he has both the tennis and the temperament to compete with the best.
