Hailey Baptiste has pulled off the biggest upset of the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open. The 30th seed eliminated World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(6), in a breathtaking encounter at the Caja Mágica.
The opening set offered little drama. Sabalenka, dominant from the baseline, powered through 6-2 in under thirty minutes. The Belarusian appeared headed for a routine victory, having lost just once all season.
Baptiste refused to fold. The American shifted her approach in the second set, mixing up angles and frequently coming forward to disrupt Sabalenka's rhythm. A convincing 6-2 leveled the match and set up a decider for the ages.
Sabalenka held six match points across the final set but failed to convert any of them. Baptiste saved each one with remarkable composure, producing clutch shots at the most critical moments. The tiebreak, won 8-6, capped an extraordinary comeback.
For Baptiste, this marks a career milestone — her first victory over a top-5 opponent. At 23, the American advances to the biggest semifinal of her career, where she will face Mirra Andreeva, who defeated Leylah Fernandez 7-6(1), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.
Sabalenka's title defence ends earlier than expected. The WTA draw remains wide open heading into Wednesday's semifinals.
