Tennis delivered both genius and controversy in the space of a few hours at Queen's Club. Corentin Moutet, ranked 36th in the world, won a gripping three-set thriller against fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the HSBC Championships first round, then turned his post-match interview into a moment of live television chaos.
The match itself deserved the spotlight. Facing Mpetshi Perricard, a devastating server capable of hitting second serves beyond 220 km/h, Moutet had to dig deep across three sets. On match point against him, the towering Frenchman fired a 228 km/h second serve. Moutet survived, then eventually clinched victory in a suffocating third set.
It was the post-match interview that went viral. Speaking live on the BBC with journalist Jenny Drummond, Moutet was asked to comment on his opponent's superhuman serve. His response was raw and unfiltered. After dropping his first expletive in English, the Frenchman was politely asked to keep things clean. His answer was to deliver six more, visibly unable to contain the adrenaline still coursing through him.
Presenter Clare Balding immediately apologised to viewers. Former British number one Annabel Croft called the behaviour "appalling," noting that children were within earshot at the Queen's Club clubhouse. The ATP is expected to fine Moutet, who stands to lose a significant portion of his tournament earnings, estimated at approximately GBP 33,000.
The episode captures a recurring paradox with Moutet. The left-handed Parisian possesses one of the most creative games on tour, blending audacious drop shots, instinctive net approaches and unpredictable shot-making. But that intensity sometimes spills beyond the sporting arena. In the second round, he will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated Arthur Rinderknech. Queen's Club will no doubt be hoping for a calmer interview.
