The Philippe-Chatrier Court held its breath for nearly five hours on Friday. Joao Fonseca, 19, produced the upset of Roland Garros 2026 by eliminating Novak Djokovic in the third round, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5, in an epic encounter.
The Serbian, chasing a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title, appeared fully in control after dominating the opening two sets. His serve was sharp, his backhand surgical. Two sets up in under two hours, Djokovic seemed to be cruising toward another routine fourth-round berth.
But the Brazilian teenager never wavered. From the start of the third set, Fonseca elevated his game, breaking early to lead 2-0. His thunderous forehand began to inflict real damage on the Parisian clay. The young Rio native took the third set 6-3, breathing new life into the contest.
The fourth set delivered unbearable tension. Djokovic served for the match at 5-4 but failed to convert. Fonseca saved match points, broke back, and snatched the set 7-5 in a raucous atmosphere. The Chatrier crowd, firmly behind the young Brazilian, roared on every point.
In the decider, Djokovic led 3-1, drawing on decades of experience. But Fonseca's physical freshness proved decisive. The Brazilian leveled at 3-3, and both players held serve until 5-5. There, Fonseca found the crucial break before serving out the match 7-5.
At 19, Fonseca becomes the first teenager in 30 years to complete back-to-back comebacks from two sets down at a Grand Slam, having already achieved the feat against Prizmic in the second round. "For me, it's a dream," he had said before the match. "I'm going to enjoy every moment of playing against the greatest tennis player in history."
With top seed eliminated in the second round and Carlos Alcaraz absent due to a wrist injury, Djokovic's defeat blows the men's draw wide open. Roland Garros 2026 will crown a first-time Grand Slam champion. (ATP Tour, RolandGarros.com)
