Joao Fonseca knows no bounds in Paris. Just two days after coming from two sets down to stun Novak Djokovic, the 19-year-old Brazilian dispatched two-time finalist Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 in three hours and 55 minutes on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The second set proved the flashpoint of the match. A marathon tiebreak decided 10-8 after a controversial line call denied Ruud a set point. The Norwegian showed his trademark resilience by snatching the third set with a break in game twelve, but Fonseca responded with veteran composure, racing to a 5-1 lead in the fourth before closing it out.
Both players finished with near-identical numbers: 51 winners and 52 unforced errors apiece. The difference came in the clutch moments, where Fonseca displayed remarkable poise for a player of his generation.
The Rio de Janeiro native becomes the first Brazilian man to reach the Roland-Garros quarterfinals since three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten. Kuerten himself watched from the stands, witnessing the emergence of his spiritual successor.
Fonseca will face , 20, in the quarterfinals. The Czech also produced an upset, eliminating Alex de Minaur in the previous round. A new-generation clash for a spot in the semi-finals awaits.
